Belonging, Being, and Becoming: The 3 Pillars of the EYLF

Raising a child is an incredible journey, but with so much on your plate, it’s easy to wonder: how can you ensure your little one is thriving, not just surviving?

In this article, we’ll share our thoughts on how the Early Years Learning Framework’s three foundational pillars shape children’s lives. Discover what they are, what they mean, and how they help your child grow!

What is Belonging Being and Becoming?

Belonging, Being, and Becoming are the three pillar concepts of the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF). These “pillars” support the learning structures that help shape young minds. Focusing on learning through play, they anchor children’s experiences during their formative years.

About the Early Years Learning Framework

The EYLF is one of the two approved learning frameworks within the larger National Quality Framework. Designed to ensure a complete approach to early childhood education, it promotes children’s learning from birth to 5 years and emphasises learning the skills to take part fully and actively in society.

  • Learn more about the Early Years Learning Framework here

The EYLF conveys the highest expectations for all children’s learning outcomes and focuses on the importance of identity, community, well-being, learning, and communication in early childhood.

Belonging: The Foundation of Learning in Early Childhood

Belonging is integral to human existence, particularly within the context of children’s relationships with family, cultural groups, and the wider community. It’s about feeling connected and forming secure attachments with family and caregivers, which are crucial for thriving. Creating a strong sense of belonging shapes children’s lives, their identity and relationships, creating a culturally inclusive environment where every child feels valued.

At Grace Village, our educators foster belonging by creating strong relationships and celebrating diversity. They ensure each child sees their culture reflected in daily activities, promoting a sense of worth and security.

Our thoughts

Belonging gives children a secure base to explore and learn, nurtured through strong relationships and an embracing of diversity. Each child is valued for their unique self.

Being: Exploring the Present Moment in Human Existence

“Being” encourages children to live in the moment and explore their world through sensory experiences. It’s about immersing themselves fully in their daily activities, meeting challenges, learning outcomes, and discovering the joys and complexities of everyday life.

At Grace Village, we create environments rich with sensory experiences. Children engage in play-based learning, sparking curiosity and imagination. They learn about emotions and respectful interactions, building self-awareness and emotional well-being.

Our thoughts

At Grace Village, ‘Being’ comes to life through rich sensory experiences and imaginative play. Children learn about emotions and respect, setting them up for smoother social interactions.

Becoming: Nurturing Potential and Growth to Promote Children’s Learning

“Becoming” focuses on nurturing each child’s potential. It’s about letting their skills and abilities unfold like a flower blooming. Children learn how to participate in society as part of this process. The framework also provides care and development opportunities for school-age children.

At Grace Village, we foster this journey by helping your child develop key skills across various domains. They build literacy through storytelling, numeracy through hands-on activities, and creativity through art. Children develop resilience and critical thinking by tackling challenges and fostering independence and agency through choice and participation.

Our thoughts

‘Becoming’ is about children shaping their future through experiences. At Grace Village, we nurture literacy, numeracy, creativity, resilience, and empathy, preparing them for life’s adventures.

The EYLF at Grace Village

Belonging, Being, and Becoming are essential threads for children’s growth. Belonging builds their foundation. Being lets them experience everyday life. Becoming shapes their potential.

At Grace Village, our passion for exceeding the standards set by the National Quality Framework helps us to create environments where children grow and flourish, embracing these three pillars of the EYLF.

As parents and educators, it is our mission to promote children’s learning and development, towards futures filled with knowledge and wisdom.

To us, these pillars aren’t just an idea. They are the essence of Grace Village Early Learning. Because it takes a village to raise a child.

I heard about grace village the minute it opened through friends. I always thought one day when I had my next baby I’ll send him there and i had my baby and started him at grace village. It really is... childcare reimagined. All the staff are so welcoming & friendly. They took onboard any information I had regarding my little one and helped me through some milestones with him. We are only leaving grace village because we got into a centre closer to home literally around the corner. I can’t thank them enough for making my return to work so easy leaving your baby isn’t easy but they kept me up to date which was re assuring that he was in good hands. Thank you Grace Village for the short amount of time we spent there.read more

If I could give more stars, I would! Grace Village is an exceptional centre! Chantel and Ray go out of their way to provide the best quality care from the moment you walk in the door. Both of my... children have attended the centre for the past three years. Both the boys have loved every moment at the centre and have huge smiles when we pick them up. The staff provide interesting and varied activities and are truly dedicated to making every day an enjoyable experience for the children. Sadly we are having to relocate but it is has been very hard to find a centre that compares. We will miss GV!!read more

GV has fantastic facilities including a third space for parents, an art atelier, lovely free-play outdoor spaces, and an epic undercover play area that allows children to be feel as though they are... playing outdoors when the weather doesn’t allow for true outside play. No other centre we have toured has offered play areas like this.We chose GV for our children because of their play-based (Reggio Emilia) philosophy and approach. We love that our little people have been able to be barefoot most of the time, supporting sensory feedback and encouraging their physical and mental development.Everyone at GV shows love for our children as they would their own. GV has been our home away from home, our family and greatest support through some very hard times.Thank you to all the nurturing educators, carers and all of the GV tribe for guiding our young man and little lady through their special formative and most impressionable years.read more

My child has attended this lovely village for almost 4 years. Awesome learning center as there is always a little bit of extra effort in every single thing that they do. They have amazing and... friendly staff, great facilities and all round activities to ensure that a child develops physically, socially, emotionally and mentally well balanced. In each special occasion they have given us special memories whether in the app, physical souvenirs and lots of memories we’ll look back on when they grow older. My son is now in kindy but he still misses the staff and his friends there. Amazing and highly recommended team !read more
