The Early Years Learning Framework isn’t just about academics; it’s about fostering a well-rounded learning experience that considers everything from strong social connections to environmental awareness.
From building strong, secure relationships with teachers to celebrating cultural differences, the eight principles of the EYLF guide our educators in creating nurturing, inclusive, and supportive learning environments, where all children can thrive.
What are the Principles of the Early Years Learning Framework?
Early childhood development is crucial in the context of the EYLF Principles, laying the foundation for lifelong learning and well-being.
Under its 3 pillars of “Belonging Being and Becoming”, the framework outlines three key areas: Principles, Practices, and Outcomes. These areas guide our educators towards achieving the EYLF Learning Outcomes.
By implementing these principles into their teaching practice, our educators create meaningful and supportive relationships and interactions with the children and families of Grace Village Early Learning.

The 8 EYLF Principles
The Early Years Learning Framework defines the eight principles as:
1. Build secure, respectful and reciprocal relationships
Strong bonds between children, educators, and families are essential. These connections support academic and emotional growth, helping children feel safe to explore and learn.
Every morning, the educators at Grace Village Early Learning start the day with a check-in circle. This ritual involves all the children and educators sitting together in a circle, greeting each other, and sharing something about their day or a feeling they are experiencing.
2. Develop partnerships
Collaboration between educators, families, and communities enriches teaching and supports holistic child development. Clear communication and mutual respect are key to these partnerships.
Every month at Grace Village’s Third Place, we host events to learn more about you, your children and the local community. Our goal with these events is to ensure families feel respected and welcomed, with opportunities to share their perspectives.
3. Are respectful of diversity
Every child is unique! This principle celebrates the rich tapestry of backgrounds, cultures, abilities, and experiences children bring to their learning environment.
Our Cultural Celebration Week looks to honour and explore the diverse backgrounds, cultures, and abilities of Grace Village’s children and families, including cultural displays, storytelling sessions and cooking classes, where our little villagers learn how to make traditional dishes from various cultures.
4. Embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives
Incorporating the rich knowledge and culture of Australia’s First Peoples deepens understanding and appreciation for all children, creating a more inclusive and respectful learning space.
Building upon our celebration of culture and diversity, we also celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives in our learning environments. Through guest speakers sharing their local knowledge, cultural workshops with First Nation’s artists, to language lessons picking up basic words of regional dialects, our little villagers gain a deeper appreciation for Australia’s original inhabitants and their rich cultural heritage.
5. Commit to equity, inclusion and high expectations
Recognising and valuing each child’s strengths, educators provide engaging, equitable learning opportunities. This helps close the achievement gap and ensures all children reach their full potential.
At Grace Village, we practice this principle by developing individualised learning plans for each child. This approach ensures every child receives tailored support and opportunities to thrive, recognising their unique strengths and needs.
6. Consider sustainability in all its forms
By teaching children to be environmentally responsible through play and exploration, they learn to respect nature and develop sustainable habits for the future.
Our focus on outdoor play at Grace Village Early Learning Centre helps to teach our little villagers about sustainability and environmental responsibility. Activities such as recycling, gardening, and conservation projects in our outdoor learning spaces encourage children to understand the significance of preserving resources and protecting ecosystems.
7. Engage in critical reflection and professional learning
Early childhood educators are lifelong learners too! Reflecting on their practices and engaging in ongoing professional development ensures they stay current with best practices and provide high-quality learning experiences.
In continuing to build their professional knowledge, our educators can create positive learning environments and become partners with children, families, and the community. To this end, Grace Village’s team meets weekly to discuss their ongoing learning and teaching practices, sharing experiences, and reflecting on what is working well and what can be improved. All of which help them meet the EYLF learning outcomes.
8. Exercise collaborative leadership and work as a team.
Early childhood settings thrive when educators work together as a team. Collaborative leadership means sharing responsibilities and contributing unique skills to create a supportive environment where everyone feels valued.
We’ve adopted a collaborative approach to curriculum planning, ensuring educators work together as a team to enhance program quality. We share responsibilities, ensuring each area of the curriculum receives expert attention. When suitable, educators may co-teach, pairing up to introduce dynamic teaching that further support children’s learning.

How the 8 Principles support your child’s learning and development
These principles of the EYLF work to create a strong foundation for how children learn and grow in early childhood settings. Focusing on care and positive experiences, these principles nurture a safe and accepting environment that sparks curiosity and prepares children for the future.
For example, secure relationships with teachers help children feel comfortable exploring and taking risks. When educators collaborate with families and the community, they gain valuable insights into each child’s unique background, allowing them to tailor their teaching approach for better learning outcomes.
The framework also emphasises high expectations and equity for all children, ensuring they receive the support they need to succeed, regardless of their situation. Every child brings something special, and educators who value this diversity create a richer learning environment for everyone. Additionally, the EYLF encourages continuous learning for educators, ensuring they stay up-to-date with best practices and provide the best possible guidance for your child’s development.
How our educators use the 8 Principles in practice
The EYLF’s principles guide educators in creating exciting learning spaces where children can explore and discover new things. Educators use various teaching methods, such as play-based learning and activities that cater to all children’s needs. They might read stories that spark curiosity about nature or set up a block-building area that encourages creativity and problem-solving.
By following these principles in daily interactions, classrooms become positive and nurturing environments that support all aspects of a child’s ongoing learning and development. Educators find a balance between providing guidance and allowing children the freedom to explore and learn at their own pace.
Why the 8 Principles are important
At Grace Village, the 8 principles are our secret sauce towards creating positive learning environments in early childhood education. By following these guidelines, educators create programs that nurture your child’s development. Imagine a classroom where children feel safe to explore and learn (secure relationships), work together on projects (collaboration), and express themselves creatively (respect for diversity).
These principles also ensure a smooth transition to kindergarten, as children build the skills to thrive in new environments (communication, confidence). Ultimately, the Early Years Learning Framework gives your child the best possible start, setting them on a path to a bright future filled with learning and success.
From the moment families enter Grace Village Early Learning, forming lasting bonds with children and their parents is our top priority. Understanding each child’s unique spark helps us support their growth through their victories, and their struggles.
Our goal is to make every child feel at home as they explore and develop. And by working to involve all in the learning process, we ensure that children receive the support they need to thrive.
